RICA Competency 6: Phonics and Sight Words - Instruction and Assessment

Use ping pong balls to teach sight words. "Throw 'the' to me."
Introduction

Instructional methodology and assessment on the fundamentals of teaching phonics. This includes understanding and implementing systematic, explicit instruction in phonics and the beginning stage and advanced stages, systematic, explicit instruction in sight words, meeting the needs of all learners and assessment of phonics and sight words. (RICA pg. 47)

Examples

In my personal experience, reading assessment results have been extremely helpful in guiding my instructional planning. During my first tutoring lesson, I was able to provide clear and explicit instruction as to what was expected of the student and once the test had been administered, I had a wealth of information from which to plan our future sessions. Once of the best methods I have found is simply practice. When a child learns a sound and then has ample opportunity to read and utilize the sound int heir day to day activities, they are more likely to retain that information and ultimately use it as a foundational skill.

The Learning to Read text mentions several ways for teachers to help their students learn high frequency words such as "incremental rehearsal, language experience, word walls, environmental print, word games and spending time with literature and poetry." (Learning to Read pg. 263) Each of these are effective methods to make learning otherwise 'boring' words fun and exciting.

Differentiation

IF the student is learning the word brick THEN they are first shown simpler words with the -ick ending, such as kick or pick. IF the student is struggling with learning high frequency words THEN the teacher can use auditory lessons to help them connect the appropriate sound to the appropriate word. IF the student is having a hard time with retaining phonic skills THEN the teacher can provide additional practice via word games to help the information stick.

Assessments

Student will read a list of target sight words.
